Our church has no ordained ministers. When Mary Baker Eddy established The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in the late 1800’s, she ordained the Bible and Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures as Pastor of the church. Members are elected on a rotating basis to read selections from these cherished books for our weekly Bible lesson sermons. Lesson topics and citations are published in various print and online editions for individual study during the week.
Our Founder and Core Beliefs
The heart of Christian Science is Love. It is about knowing and feeling the goodness of God in every aspect of our lives. The discoverer and founder of Christian Science is Mary Baker Eddy who was an influential American author, teacher, healer and religious leader, recognized around the world for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She wrote down and shared these ideas in her major work, Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875. Christian Science is deeply Christian. As a devout student of the Bible, Mary Baker Eddy identified the underlying principles of Jesus’ teachings and discovered how to apply them in daily life. Christian Science encourages people to see things from a spiritual perspective, as Jesus taught.
In 1879 the First Church of Christ, Scientist was founded, in Boston, Massachusetts which today has branch churches and societies around the world. First Church, Oakland is one of those branches.
Our church was founded in 1895.
Christian Science has been confused with Scientology, faith healing, New Age practices, Eastern Religions, and has been accused of being non-Christian and a cult. None of these things are true. Christian Science is deeply Christian and is solidly based on the Bible and on the teachings of Christ Jesus. It teaches that God’s will for everyone is good. God does not bring suffering, sickness or death. God is entirely good, and His will for His children is only goodness, health and life. God is Love.
